Improve Your High-Guard While Kicking

This tiny adjustment blew my mind!

A few weeks ago I had the honor of training with Ajarn Chai, the founder of the World Thai Boxing Association which The Cellar Gym and I are both members of. During his seminar he gave one little tip for making your “high guard” better during your round kicks.

I got so excited during the seminar because I knew this tiny adjustment would make it 1000% easier to teach the high guard during kicks. Often times I see adult and youth students struggle with one of two things:

1.) They don’t swing their opposite side arm, which minimized their potential power.

2.) They over-swing their opposite side arm, which telegraphs the kick too much and creates too many openings to get hit.

Adjusting your mechanics to touch your elbow during the setup of the high guard can fix both of these issues immediately. It’s so incredibly simple, but it fixes two big problems quickly. Give it a try!
